Description
Organic Bacopa Monnieri Extract is a perennial, creeping herb native to the wetlands of India, along with southeastern Asia and Australia. The herb is a staple of Indian Ayurveda where it is known as brahmi, while the common name in English is water hyssop. The herb contains large amounts of potassium salt, containing a lot of dihydroxyethyl amine, malic acid, vitamin B1, B2 and other nutrients.
Research indicate it has a strong inhibitory effects, for example shigella, escherichia coli, staphylococcus aureus and other bacteria, which is why it’s known as “a natural antibiotic”.
Function
- Cognition. In India, organic bacopa monnieri extract is known as a brain tonic because it can be used to improve learning problems, memory and concentration. Recent research backs up this traditional usage. A study on older, healthy Australians at Southern Cross University in New South Wales, Australia found that it has an ability to improve memory acquisition and retention. The effect of promoting cognitive function is mainly due to the two active saponins A and B.
- Indigestion. One study found that bacopa monnieri, when taken with bael fruit, was more effective than a conventional treatment for severe diarrhea. In patients with constipation, conventional treatment worked better. However, both conventional treatment and the bacopa worked better than placebo.
- Antifungal. Another study found the plant has antifungal properties against microsporum (causes ringworm, etc), aspergillus flavus (causes lung infection, etc), aspergillus niger (causes fungal ear infections, etc), and trichophyton rubrum (causes athlete’s foot, etc).
- Calm. By different from mechanisms from traditional calming meds, saponins can improve cognitive function while reducing stress and producing an anti-anxiety effect. Conventional calming medications may result in cognitive decline, while bacopa may enhance the memory function.
- Blood Sugar. Bacopa has antihyperglycemic properties, which makes it popular as an aid for high blood sugar. Research have found that supplementing may ameliorate symptoms.
- Potentially Neuroprotective. A 2007 study at Texas A&M University found that it reduces amyloid deposits in mice with age-related neurological issues.
