Description
Cissus Repens Extract is part of the grape wine family and one of the best known out of 800 species in the world. The plant is native to the tropical climates of Southeast Asia, such as Malaysia and Indonesia. The species have a long history as medicinal plants in Thailand and remain popular today in traditional medicine, such as ‘khao-yen nuer’ and ‘khao-yen tai’.
Modern science has been identified a number of compounds, including polyphenols and terpenes, including ursolic acid, sitosterol, lupeol, Asiatic acid, friedelin, epifriedelanol, and d-α-Tocopherol. A study comparing four of the most known plants in this family, including quadrangularis, showed the cissus repens variant contained the highest amounts of Beta-Sitosterol, Phytol Isomers, 4-Vinylphenol, along with a fair amount of Vitamin E.
It is known to alleviate inflammatory pain, which is thought to be due to the plant flavonoids, as they show anti-inflammatory effects from scavenging ROS and reducing proinflammatory cytokines. The roots and stems are often used for rheumatic pain, bone fractures, tumours, long-term coughs and digestion.
Function
People take cissus repens extract for a wide variety of reasons.
- Joint Health and Pain Management. Cissus repens has been traditionally used to address joint-related issues and pain. Research suggests that the plant may possess anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, making it a potential ally in managing joint pain and discomfort. It may support overall joint health and mobility.
- Blood Sugar Regulation. Some studies suggest that Cissus repens may have hypoglycemic effects, assisting in the regulation of blood sugar levels. This potential benefit makes it of interest in the management of diabetes and metabolic health. However, more research is needed to establish its efficacy and safety in this regard.
- Gastrointestinal Health. Traditional uses of Cissus repens include digestive health benefits. It may have gastroprotective effects, potentially helping to alleviate gastric issues. Research on its impact on gastrointestinal health is ongoing, and further studies are needed to validate its efficacy for specific digestive concerns.
- Bone Health and Fracture Healing. Studies have investigated the role of Cissus repens in promoting bone health and fracture healing. The extract is believed to stimulate the production of collagen and enhance the mineralization of bones, potentially accelerating the healing process and supporting overall bone density.
- Weight Management. Cissus repens has been explored for its potential role in weight management. Research indicates that it may influence lipid metabolism and adipogenesis, making it a subject of interest for those seeking natural support in weight loss or weight maintenance efforts.
- Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Effects. Cissus repens extract contains compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties may help combat oxidative stress and inflammation in the body, contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases and supporting overall health.
- Antimicrobial Properties. Cissus repens extract has demonstrated antimicrobial activity against certain pathogens. While more research is needed to establish its broad-spectrum efficacy, these properties suggest potential benefits in supporting the body’s defense against infections.
