Description
Lutein Carotenoid 20% Powder is made from the vivid marigold flowers. Lutein is part of the natural carotenoids and particularly the subgroup xanthophylls. Like other xanthophylls it is found in small quantities in all leafy greens, but is especially rich in marigold flowers. Together with zeaxanthin it is the main pigment in the macular area of the eye retina. While we have high amounts of both carotenoids in the eyes, these are not produced in the body and we must get a sufficient amounts in our plant foods or through dietary supplements.
Studies have shown that it plays an important role in maintaining normal vision and in preventing ocular diseases, such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. Adequate intake of the carotenoids can also reduce the risk of colorectal cancer and heart disease.
Function
1. Eye Health and Vision Protection
The most well-documented benefit of lutein is its protective effect on eye health. Lutein is a major component of the macular pigment in the retina, along with another carotenoid, zeaxanthin. Together, these pigments filter high-energy blue light and protect photoreceptor cells from oxidative damage.
- Macular Degeneration Prevention. Lutein has been shown to reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), as higher levels of lutein in the macula are associated with better visual acuity.
- Cataract Reduction. Lutein reduces oxidative stress in the lens of the eye, which may lower the risk of cataract formation. Studies suggest that people with higher dietary intake or blood levels of lutein are less likely to develop cataracts.
2. Brain Health and Cognitive Function
Emerging research suggests that lutein may also support cognitive health, particularly in aging populations.
- Neuroprotective Properties. Lutein is one of the few carotenoids that can cross the blood-brain barrier and accumulate in the brain, particularly in areas associated with memory and learning. It helps reduce oxidative damage and inflammation, both of which are linked to cognitive decline.
- Improved Cognitive Performance. Higher lutein levels have been associated with better cognitive performance, especially in older adults. Studies suggest that lutein supplementation may enhance memory, executive function, and processing speed.
3. Skin Health
Lutein also benefits skin health by neutralizing free radicals and protecting the skin from UV-induced damage.
- UV Protection. Lutein has been shown to reduce oxidative stress in skin cells caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation. It helps maintain skin hydration, elasticity, and overall resilience, reducing signs of photoaging such as wrinkles and fine lines.
- Anti-Inflammatory Properties. The ability to reduce skin inflammation makes lutein beneficial for individuals with inflammatory skin conditions.
4. Cardiovascular Health
Although less studied than its effects on eye and skin health, lutein may also benefit cardiovascular health.
- Anti-Inflammatory Effects. Lutein reduces levels of inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP), which are associated with cardiovascular disease.
- Arterial Health. Studies suggest that lutein may help prevent arterial plaque buildup and improve endothelial function, promoting healthy blood flow and reducing the risk of atherosclerosis.
5. Antioxidant
As a powerful antioxidant, lutein protects cells from damage caused by free radicals, which are implicated in various age-related conditions.
