Organic Fo Ti Root Extract 20:1 (He Shou Wu, Fallopia Multiflora, Polygonum Multiflorum) has since ancient history been used in traditional Eastern medicine to treat liver and kidney health. It is still perceived as an elixir for youth due to the improvement invigorating effect, but also because it can fight the signs of aging, e.g. hair loss and graying hair.
The root may also improve skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and dermatitis, along with various health issues, such as tuberculosis, high cholesterol, prostatitis, atherosclerosis, joint pain and neurodegenerative disease. The benefits seems to be largely due to the antioxidants and bioactive substances, such as anthraquinones, emodin, chrysophanic acids, rhein, lecithin, and stilbene glycosides.
Function
- Anti-Aging. Studies show that the plant extract improves the cardiovascular system, enhances immune functions, slows gland degeneration, increases antioxidant activity, and reduces the accumulation of lipid peroxidation. Moreover, the supplement increases the body’s production of superoxide dismutase (SOD), which decreases as we age. This results genetic defects in cells, which eventually give rise to multiple diseases. Stilbene glycosides are powerful antioxidants that in combination with the increased superoxide dismutase makes it a premier antioxidant supplement.
- Anti-Inflammatory. Multiple studies have demonstrated the anti-inflammatory effects are due to the bioactive constituents in fo ti root extract / he shou wu – which inhibit inflammation – including nuclear factor-κB, nitric oxide synthase, tumor necrosis factor-α, and chemokines. The effect is similar to anti-inflammatory prescription medicine used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases and dyslipidemia, but may also useful for reducing aching joints and back pain.
- Premature hair graying / hair loss. The plant has also been investigated as a prospective treatment against alopecia and premature graying of hair, thinning hair and hair loss. A 2017 study found that fo ti used at safe doses can act as a potential agent for the treatment of loss pigmentation-related diseases. It seems to significantly induce melanin synthesis, which has a positive effect on hair pigmentation.
- Liver. He Shou Wu has been shown to increase the hepatic antioxidant superoxide dismutase (SOD), accumulate of lipid peroxidase, enhance cell-mediated immune responses, and reduce LDL cholesterol. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is a critical antioxidant enzyme your body makes as a defense against superoxide, which is one of the most dangerous free radicals, but most notably our DNA.
- Constipation. The anthraquinones functions as a natural laxative, which helps reducing constipation. When used for this purpose, it is recommended to use the extract temporarily for a few days.
- Skin. Fo ti is used in certain skin care and hair products and can be applied directly to the skin to help treat many different ailments, such as acne, sores, carbuncles, skin eruptions, itching, athlete’s foot, dermatitis, razor burn and scrapes. According to the health site WebMD, it can protect the skin thanks to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.
- Adrenal. The adrenal cortex is responsible for making a group of hormones known as corticosteroids, e.g. glucocorticoids. Glucocorticoids are necessary for glucose metabolism, the immune function, and for detoxification.
Suggested use
Take 500 mg to 1,500 mg daily.
Note that fo ti may adversely affect the liver at very high doses (5000 mg). Always discuss with your healthcare provider before you begin using the supplement if you suffer from a liver disease or to rule out drug interactions.
