Description
Premium Maqui Berry Extract Powder (Chilean Wine Berry) is made from a deep, purple colored berry that grows in the Patagonia region of South America. The plant is a sacred to the Mapuche Indians, which are the indigenous inhabitants to Southwestern Chile. The Mapuche believe the maqui berry provide secret healing powers that boosts stamina and energy. The traditional belief is at least supported, as maqui exhibits anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic effects. Despite having a similar color and name to Açaí, the two plants are completely unrelated and have different benefits.
Maqui berries contains particularly high levels of antioxidants, including a rare anthocyanin called delphinidin. The anti-inflammatory effect of the delphinidins may help to reduce inflammation, which are often the hallmark of several degenerative diseases. The antioxidants may even be beneficial for eye health, weight control, and may potentially even inhibit the growth of colon cancer cells.
Function
People use maqui berry extract powder for many different reasons.
- Rich in Antioxidants. The berries are loaded with antioxidants, such as the anthocyanins, which are the pigments that gives the fruit its deep purple color. These compounds neutralizes free radicals that cause cell damage, inflammation – and overtime – chronic conditions. Studies suggest that diets that are high in antioxidants can reduce the risk for heart disease and cancer.
- Blood Sugar Levels. Maqui may support natural moderation of blood sugar, as the compounds affect the how the body breaks down carbohydrates for energy. In some studies, diets that are high in the antioxidants are associated with substantially reduced risk of diabetes.
- Gut Health. Our intestines contains trillions of bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which collectively are known as the gut microbiome. A diverse gut microbiome influences the immune system, the heart, and the brain. Research indicate the maqui compounds can help mold and reshape your microbiota by increasing the good bacteria types.
- Neuroprotection. The delphinidin in maqui has shown promise in protecting brain cells from damage and degeneration, which could have implications for neurodegenerative conditions. Studies suggest that delphinidin may help reduce neuroinflammation, enhance antioxidant defenses, and promote neuronal survival and function.
- Heart Health. Some research indicates that delphinidin in maqui may have cardioprotective effects by improving vascular function, reducing inflammation, and lowering blood pressure. Thus, helping to prevent the oxidation of LDL (bad) cholesterol, inhibit platelet aggregation, and promote blood vessel dilation, which can contribute to improved cardiovascular health and reduced risk of heart conditions.
- Anti-Inflammatory. Delphinidin has been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting the production of inflammatory molecules and reducing inflammation in various tissues and organs. By modulating inflammatory pathways, it may help to alleviate symptoms associated with inflammatory conditions like arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma.
- Anticancer. Some studies suggest that delphinidin may have anticancer properties by inhibiting the growth and proliferation of cancer cells, inducing apoptosis (programmed cell death), and preventing angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels to support tumor growth). Delphinidin may also help protect against DNA damage and oxidative stress, which are implicated in cancer development.
