Description
Premium N-Acetylneuraminic Acid (NANA / Neu5Ac) – also known as Sialic Acid (SIA) – is naturally occurring sugar found in the body and various animal tissues. It may offer a range of potential health benefits, particularly in the areas of immune function, cognitive health, and maintaining a healthy gut microbiome.
It is particularly important for the brain function, as it plays a role in neurotransmission and in synaptogenesis. Synaptogenesis means the formation of synapses between neurons in the brain, which is important during the early childhood. Thus, it plays an essential role in proper brain development and cognition, and it is regularly added to milk replacement formulas.
Aside from synaptogenesis, it is believed that sialic acid plays a decisive role in enabling neurotransmission between neurons. Studies on animals show that pups supplemented with the compound display improved learning and memory as adults. This includes piglets, which when fed high doses of the sialic learns quicker and makes fewer mistakes.
Sialic acid also plays a role in the risk reduction of mucous membrane infections, such as the mouth, nose, gastrointestinal tract, and the respiratory tract. In these organs it functions as a receptor for influenza viruses.
Function
People take premium n-acetylneuraminic acid for a variety of reasons.
- Cognition. Neu5Ac is involved in the formation of brain cell connections and in facilitating interactions between cells, a process essential for learning, memory, and overall cognitive function. Studies suggest supplementation may improve cognitive performance and reduce age-related cognitive decline. In one study, older adults who received n-acetylneuraminic acid demonstrated enhanced memory and attention compared to those who received a placebo.
- Immune System. NANA is integral to the structure of glycoproteins on the surface of immune cells. By enhancing the recognition and communication between immune cells, it can support a robust immune response. This is particularly important for the body’s defense against infections and reducing the risk of chronic inflammatory conditions. The antiviral properties means it can interfere with the ability of certain viruses to attach to and enter host cells, potentially reducing the risk and severity of viral infections.
- Neuro Health. N-Acetylneuraminic acid is present in the brain and is a component of gangliosides, which play a role in neuronal development and function. Supplementation may contribute to neurological health, potentially supporting cognitive function and protecting against neurodegenerative conditions.
- Gut Microbiome. Neu5Ac plays a role in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, the community of bacteria that reside in the intestines. This is achieved through its interaction with bacterial cells, influencing their metabolism and growth. A healthy gut microbiome is essential for overall health and well-being. Moreover, NANA may contribute to the health of the gastrointestinal mucosa, supporting the integrity of the digestive system.
- Skin Tissue. N-Acetylneuraminic acid is found in skin tissues were its presence is important for maintaining skin hydration and supporting skin health. Supplementation may contribute to a healthy, youthful appearance.
